As part of the 2017 Powerade State Games, the USA Track and Field Region III Championships were held July 6-9 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro. Youth athletes from Age Division 8 & Under to Age Division 17-18, competed to win USAFT medals and to advance to nationals.

I did not participate in track in high school, and I have never been to a track meet, which made this event interesting and fun to work!  I began working as a hammer throw spotter and retriever. With little instruction, I was almost hit by a flying hammer, and I fell in the grass while running away from it.  Needless to say, falling and watching the high school participants laugh at me was not a great start to the event. But, I quickly recovered, understood the events, what to look for, and how to safely maneuver the hammer throw, discus, and shot put. I also worked the pole vaulting event; I retrieved the pole and increased the bar’s height throughout the event.

The next USA Track and Field sanctioned event will be the 5K Mission Run/Walk on July 15 in Mount Olive, NC.
