Fainting Goat Spirits Distillery: Defining the Flavor of Greensboro
Ever seen a fainting goat? When some goats get frightened or excited, they freeze for a few seconds and collapse on their sides, but then get back up and continue to run. Bill Norman, co-owner of Fainting Goat Spirits Distillery, describes his family members like fainting goats; he says they are all “a little out there” and they may take a few tumbles, but they get right back up to run around. More importantly, videos of fainting goats make the family laugh together! This realization led to the naming of Guilford County and Greensboro’s first distillery, Fainting Goat Spirits.
Though the Norman family opened the distillery just a year ago, in the 2017 New York International Spirits Competition, their Emulsion New American Gin took home a Gold Medal, their Tiny Cat Vodka took home a Silver, and they won North Carolina Distillery of the Year.
The family is composed of the Master Distiller Bill, his wife and business expert Shelly, their children Andrew the Master Distiller, and Lesley the businesswoman extraordinaire.
They offer vodka, gin, single malt whiskey, bourbon, and rye whiskey. It is important to them that their end product is all theirs, and they have a way to shape the flavor in every step of the process. It is also important to the family to stay local; they mill grain every day and use only local North Carolina grown rye, wheat, and corn, which amount to around 16,000 pounds a month.
