October 22, 2009 - WILD ‘CANID’ COUPLE NOW IN GREENSBORO AT THE NATURAL SCIENCE CENTER!
Greensboro, NC - It may not be a match made in heaven, but a match determined by scientists and geneticists has found its way to Greensboro! Nasca and Lana, the Natural Science Center’s all-new breeding pair of maned wolves are currently living in separate quarters as keepers and curators prepare for the BIG introduction day.
Nasca (pictured left), a regal looking two-year-old male maned wolf from the Smithsonian’s Conservation Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia, is currently on exhibit in the Center’s Brooks Family Maned Wolf Conservation Center. Lana, an eleven-month-old petite maned wolf will spend the next (approximately) twenty days in the Center’s quarantine facility as she acclimates to North Carolina’s fall temperatures after coming from the White Oak Conservation Center in northern Florida.
The two, hopefully soon-to-be soul mates, will be introduced sometime in November. The strongest likelihood for breeding behavior to begin is after both animals have reached three years of age. The Science Center team is hopeful that with the exhibit’s large size, high-grass design (much like their native habitat in the upper grassland elevation of central South America) and through excellent diet and care that Greensboro will become a successful center for the species propagation!
The Natural Science Center is located at 4301 Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, NC and is home of the Animal Discovery Zoological Park (featuring tigers, gibbons, wallabies, meerkats, lemurs and many other unique animals), as well as the brand new OmniSphere Theater (North Carolina’s only 40 foot digital dome experience).
